Sprayed Seal ITP: Binder, Aggregate, Application and Road Lot Records

Sprayed sealing is a sequence of binder and aggregate operations whose evidence must follow the selected treatment and road lot. Keep the chosen binder, aggregate, application design, surface and traffic protection connected in the record.

Scope of this guide

For sprayed bituminous surfacing, including prime, primerseal and seal treatments as specified. The source is Lake Macquarie Council’s 1143 worksection template with local schedules and examples. Project-adopted clauses control all criteria, notices, test frequencies and points. This guide excludes asphalt paving and seal design decisions.

Choose the actual treatment from the contract documents

The source distinguishes prime, primerseal, single and multiple seals, modified binders, geotextile-reinforced seals and reseals. Confirm treatment, binder/aggregate combination, locations and application sequence in the schedule of job details and drawings. A double/double seal or geotextile system has distinct stages; do not collapse it into one generic “spray” row.

The source’s Hold/Witness table is tied to its own clauses and project roles. Use the project’s adopted control-point legend and notice/release procedure rather than copying the example notice periods.

InputExtract and resolve before work
Schedule / drawingsRoad limits, treatment type, layers/applications, binder and aggregate sizes, intersections and interfaces.
Design / submissionSpecified seal design, application-rate basis, proposed materials and review/approval route.
Material evidenceBinder and aggregate sources, delivery/lot IDs, certificates and source approval required by contract.
Work methodSurface preparation, traffic control, sprayer/spreader/roller, joints/tapers and weather or operating conditions if specified.
Quality controlsTesting and field observations, project frequencies, loose aggregate check, notice points and release roles.
Record closeoutDaily record, lot map, material traceability, testing, remedial work, disposal and road opening evidence.

Record each operation in order

Lake Macquarie 1143 identifies planning and submissions, traffic provision, cleaning, protection of road furniture, optional geotextile, primer/binder application, aggregate spreading, rolling, loose aggregate removal, waste handling and care of completed work. Turn applicable operations into separate rows and retain the actual observed event data.

This is a planning map, not a construction method. Where fabric treatment is selected, its tack coat, fabric placement and later spray operations follow the approved system sequence; other treatments omit that branch.

1. ReadinessApproved treatment and source-specific design; project traffic/occupancy and required plant submissions.Road/lot; approved design ID/revision; material and plant submittal references; point notice/release if applicable.
2. Surface preparationProject-defined base condition, cleaning, repairs and protection before spraying.Surface/lot; preparation and repair references; observed condition; inspection date and issue.
3. Fabric treatment, only if selectedUse the approved fabric treatment sequence; distinguish its tack coat and fabric placement from subsequent spray runs. Do not insert fabric into an ordinary seal treatment.Fabric product/batch; tack-coat/run reference; extent/joints; placement evidence; approved sequence reference.
4. Primer or binder spray runsUse the selected treatment schedule for each primer, primerbinder or binder application; relate each run to any preceding fabric treatment where required.Material/type/batch; sprayer ID/calibration reference; run location/start/end; required actual application record; interruption/defect.
5. Aggregate spread and rollingApproved aggregate source/size and project sequence/application requirements.Source/docket; spreader/roller; lot/extent; observed uniformity and rolling event; sample/test evidence if required.
6. Sweep and protectProject trigger for loose aggregate removal, temporary markers, warning signs and opening to traffic.Sweep/inspection record; waste/disposal evidence; protection and marker references; release/traffic status assigned by contract.
7. CloseoutReconcile required surface evidence, open defects, material/testing records and as-built extent.Lot map; tests; defects/remedy/recheck; records index; authorised project disposition.

Keep each actual application distinguishable, especially for multiple treatments. This is a blank field model only; it does not state that application or testing occurred.

Keep local treatment criteria local

The Lake Macquarie worksection is an Australian municipal specification template with a schedule of job details. Its binder, aggregate, application and point provisions are not national defaults. When a contract adopts another authority’s specification, map to that source instead and preserve the actual edition and amendments.

Do not use the record to assert a test result, application rate or opening approval that was not measured or issued. Keep a missing material source or unclear application sequence open and route it to the project decision-maker.

Fictional workflow: keep two seal applications distinct

Fictional sequence only; no actual rates, measurements, materials, results or release are represented.

  1. Identify the contract-defined road lot and the selected two-application treatment.
  2. Create one planned row and event record for each application, each tied to its specified material source and design revision.
  3. Record actual binder and aggregate delivery identifiers, equipment, location and observed operations.
  4. Link sweep/protection records and any required testing to the same lot.
  5. Leave opening status and unresolved surface defects to the project’s authorised process.
