Liquid-Applied Exposed Roof Waterproofing ITP: System Selection and Zone Records

An exposed-roof membrane plan should show which system is installed in each zone and how substrate preparation, details, primer, membrane layers and any specified finish stay traceable. An internal bathroom checklist cannot establish those roof-system requirements.

Scope of this guide

Document preparation for one specified liquid-applied exposed-roof waterproofing system. Balconies under tiles, sheet membranes, pools, tanks and below-ground work need their own system sources. This guide supplies a sequence and blank record structure; it does not select products, design falls/drainage, prescribe test values or certify waterproofing.

Resolve the system before drafting application rows

Identify the roof zone, existing or new substrate, exposure and permitted use/traffic, approved detail and specified membrane system. Collect current project-approved technical data for the actual primer, membrane, detailing components and finish.

The supplier-hosted MAPEI B07 work method statement distinguishes substrate conditions and alternative water-based and solvent-based systems. Its 2021 revision illustrates why products and application rules must be selected together; it expressly requires the relevant technical data and project-specific advice. Do not combine compatible-sounding options into a new system.

InputRecord the actual source
Roof zone and substrateLocation/area; substrate or existing coating; approved falls/drainage and detail references; preceding-work handover.
Selected complete systemSystem ID; primer; membrane; joint/detail treatment; reinforcement where specified; finish/topcoat; current approved product documents.
Application and readiness requirementsApplicable surface/environment conditions, preparation, layer measurements, recoat/curing and permitted exposure/use from the selected system.
Inspection and completion requirementsProject notice/release route, any specified test procedure, protection responsibility and roof-zone handover evidence.

Sequence the work without mixing product alternatives

StageCheck and evidence structure
Substrate handoverIdentify the actual substrate/old coating, approved preparation and falls/drainage references; record defects and dependencies.
Preparation and local repairsLink authorised preparation/repair to the zone; retain condition and readiness evidence before primer.
Junctions, movement details and outletsIdentify each approved detail and selected compatible treatment; record completion before membrane obscures it.
PrimerRecord the product/batch, substrate condition, location and application/readiness evidence required by its current instructions.
Membrane layersRecord zone, product/batch, layer identity and actual required measurements; link recoat/readiness evidence to the selected system.
Specified finish and protectionInclude the selected topcoat/finish where required and retain readiness, damage and repair evidence before permitted traffic or handover.

Copy a roof-zone and layer record into the project form

The table below is a blank record specification, not evidence of work performed. Repeat the layer group for each actual layer required by the selected system. Do not prefill observations, dates, measurements or approval.

Record groupFields to provide
Zone and basisProject/package; roof/zone ID; substrate; selected system; ITP item/revision; approved drawing/detail and product document locators.
Substrate and detail readinessActual observed condition; preparation/repair evidence; junction/outlet detail IDs; open issue and responsible response.
Each primer/membrane/finish eventActual product/batch; zone/layer; application date; required environmental/readiness evidence; specified measurement method/units; actual reading and evidence reference.
Next-operation readinessSelected system recoat/curing/use requirement reference; actual evidence; permitted next operation; project review/release reference where required.
Damage and closeoutDefect location; authorised repair instruction; actual repair/recheck evidence; protection owner; final zone handover record.

Do not copy wet-area test or cure assumptions

An internal wet-area flood-test record does not establish whether a roof test is required, how it should be performed or when this system is ready for it. Where the project specifies testing, cite its procedure, coverage, acceptance basis and responsible party before adding the test row.

Keep unknown values as precise queries: identify the selected product/document, the missing readiness or measurement rule, the affected zone/layer and the decision owner. Do not replace the missing rule with a typical coat thickness or bathroom flood duration.

Complete the plan with the governing product and project requirement Source each actual acceptance condition.

Keep repairs and protection within the same roof-zone trail

Retain the original observed damage or failed inspection, identify its exact zone/detail, and record the authorised treatment separately from its actual repair and recheck. Product changes need a controlled system decision, not a field substitution of one component.

Record who protects the completed zone, any permitted access/use condition and the later inspection or handover reference required by the project. Completing a layer record does not itself authorise traffic or release a contractual hold.

Use the project NCR route when a departure requires it Trace defects, action and reinspection.

Assess affected ITP rows and records when an approved source changes Control a changed system or detail.

Have the selected roof system documented

Send the roof-zone drawings/details, selected complete system and current product documents, substrate/repair information, inspection/test requirements and mandatory contractor form. We map the defined package into the ITP and matching blank records.

USD 99 per defined work package; Excel, Word and PDF; within 24 hours after payment and complete usable required files. The service prepares documents, while design, application, actual testing/inspection and certification stay with the assigned project parties.

State that this order is an exposed-roof system rather than the internal wet-area baseline Review waterproofing drafting scope.

Fictional example: the membrane is named but the primer basis is missing

A fictional source-gap workflow only; no product selection, technical value, installed layer or test result is supplied.

  1. Identify fictional Roof Zone EX-R and the submitted membrane document.
  2. The substrate is an existing coating, but the approved compatible primer/preparation instruction is absent.
  3. Record the missing system decision and affected primer/membrane rows; keep the unresolved instruction visible.
  4. After the project supplies the approved instruction, update its locator and blank layer fields, then follow the actual event/inspection and separate release process.
