Concrete Kerb and Footpath ITP: Subgrade, Joints, Finish and Records

Kerbs and footpaths need their own inspection sequence because their line, levels, joints, surface finish and interfaces are recorded along narrow runs and discrete panels. Identify each segment and joint layout before concrete placement.

Scope of this guide

For minor cast-in-place concrete works such as kerb and gutter, crossings, footpaths, driveways and paving. The reference is ACT Government Specification SS06 Section 6, a jurisdiction-specific roadworks source. Its project values, tolerances, test frequencies and Hold Point apply only where adopted. Structural slabs, buildings and major concrete are outside scope.

Define segment limits and project controls

SS06 Section 6 separates earthworks, grading, subbase, formwork, finishing, joints, curing/protection, making good, conformance and testing. Use that as a source-specific workflow and break a long run into project-defined lots or pour segments with a consistent location key.

Before work, confirm the current approved cross-sections and levels, service/kerb interfaces, joint plan, concrete and reinforcement requirements, access/traffic controls, test plan and any adopted inspection notices. The ACT specification’s values and Hold Point are not automatically applicable outside its contract.

InputWhat the plan needs
Alignment and geometryApproved line, levels, crossfall, transitions, crossing types, drainage interfaces and segment extents.
Ground and substrateSubgrade and subbase source, preparation, test evidence, release status and locations.
Formwork and reinforcementForm / slip-form method, reinforcement only where specified, cast-in items and associated evidence.
Concrete and finishSpecified mix, supply evidence, sampling/testing plan, finish type and curing/protection method.
Joints and interfacesApproved joint drawing/schedule, existing structures, adjacent pavement and utility/kerb markers.
Conformance / closeoutApplicable criteria, test/report routing, defective-work process, reinstatement and as-built survey.

Inspect in a sequence that preserves access

Keep pre-pour checks separate from finishing and final conformity. For each segment, record the drawing source and actual evidence while the feature can still be seen.

StagePlan check and source locatorRecord evidence
Set-outSegment chainage/grid, line/level and cross-section from approved drawings.Survey or set-out record, segment limits, any unresolved level/interface.
Subgrade and subbaseProject-defined preparation, material, testing and release requirements.Test report and lot references, observed condition, level evidence, release reference where required.
Formwork and reinforcementProfile, edge restraint, reinforcement/cast-ins where specified and approved detail.Form/line/level check, reinforcement or embed record, photos before concealment if required.
Pre-pour readinessProject-specified notice, cleanliness, joint materials, concrete supply and approved sequence.Checklist/inspection record, required notices and response, mix and delivery plan, open items.
Placement and finishPlacement/compaction method, crossfall/profile, texture and edge treatment from contract.Docket/sample references, event time, segment, observed finish, joint locations and any interruption.
Curing and protectionSpecified curing method, duration and protection conditions.Product/application or alternative method, time and area, damage/weather event, repair/recheck.
Final and making goodLevels, alignment, surface defects, interfaces, service reinstatement and required testing.Survey/test records, defect/NCR, repair and recheck, as-built reference and authorised closeout.

Blank kerb or footpath event record

Use a separate record for each work segment or a controlled form that preserves segment and pour identification. Leave results and signatures blank until the event.

Do not transplant an authority’s values

SS06 includes local provisions on subbase, geometry, joints, curing, conformance, testing and a concrete placement Hold Point. Use those details only when the ACT specification and its revision are incorporated into the job. A project in another jurisdiction needs its own adopted authority specification and contract requirements.

Where a specified crossfall, joint, mix, frequency or release condition is missing, cite the exact missing document and ask through the project process. Do not fill the gap from a publicly found council standard.

Fictional workflow: close one footpath segment

Fictional segment only. No real inspection, concrete test, measured tolerance, acceptance or release is asserted.

  1. Set a fictional segment ID from the project chainage limits and approved cross-section.
  2. Link the actual substrate report and set-out record before creating the pre-pour event.
  3. Record forms, specified reinforcement and joint positions while visible; retain any required release record.
  4. Attach delivery and sample identifiers to the actual placement and finish record.
  5. Link curing/protection, survey, defects and authorised disposition before segment closeout.
